Chapter 4

Love at First Sight

An hour later, the grueling strategy session was finally over. The heavy double doors of the executive wing swung open, and the men stepped out into the main lobby. Jung-Hoon adjusted the cuffs of his shirt, turning his gaze toward his cousin. "Where exactly are we heading now?" U-Ram glanced back at him, a knowing subtle smile touching his lips. "Your father called me earlier. He wants us to join him for a formal gathering." Jung-Hoon narrowed his eyes slightly, already predicting the tedious corporate networking awaiting him. With a quiet sigh, he climbed into the back of the waiting luxury car, settling into the leather seat as the vehicle merged into the busy streets of Seoul. Across town, the sky had turned an ominous bruised purple. Syanja sat in the back of the sedan, still looking out the window, when a sudden violent downpour slammed against the glass. Within minutes, the rain was falling so heavily that the neon signs of the city blurred into streaks of light. Driver Lee slowed the vehicle down, his brow furrowing as he stared through the swishing windshield wipers. "Miss Syanja, we might have to pull over or wait this out for a moment. The rain's blinding, and a heavy fog is rolling in. I can barely see the road ahead." Syanja snapped out of her thoughts, looking at the dense grey mist blanketing the asphalt. "Yes, Mr. Lee, you're absolutely right. Please, pull over where it’s safe." To pass the time, Syanja pulled her phone out of her bag, mindlessly scrolling through her notifications. But a strange instinct made her look back out the window, squinting through the thick fog. Her heart instantly dropped. On the concrete footpath just a few yards away, a bruised-looking woman and a young boy were huddled together. They were shivering violently under the freezing downpour, completely exposed to the elements without an umbrella or a jacket. Without a second thought, Syanja reached onto the back seat, grabbed a large umbrella, and threw her door open. "Miss Syanja!" Lee called out in surprise. Ignoring the chill of the rain hitting her skin, Syanja rushed through the downpour toward the shivering pair. Seeing them up close broke her heart. She immediately popped the umbrella open, holding it over the mother's head to shield them from the wind. Unzipping her bag with trembling fingers, she pulled out a stack of cash and pressed it into the woman's wet hands. As the woman gasped, Syanja’s eyes traveled downward, landing on the little boy’s feet. He was barefoot, his skin pale and blue from the biting cold. Syanja didn't hesitate. She knelt directly into the puddles, slipped her own sneakers off her feet, and handed them to the child. "Here," she said softly, her voice warm despite the storm. "Wear them. They'll keep your feet warm." The boy stared at her with wide tearful eyes, hesitating. Syanja just offered a reassuring smile, gently taking his small feet and helping him slide into the shoes. As she stood back up, the little boy suddenly threw his arms around her waist, hugging her tightly in silent gratitude. Syanja’s eyes softened, and she gently rubbed his back. As they broke the hug, a shadow stepped over them. Driver Lee had rushed out of the car, holding a second umbrella over Syanja’s head to shield her from the downpour. "Let's get back inside, Miss Syanja," Lee urged gently, concerned by her soaked clothes and bare feet. Syanja nodded, turning back toward the car. But before she could take a step, she felt a small tug on the hem of her shirt. She glanced down, confused. The little boy was looking up at her, a beautiful smile on his face as he extended his hand. Held tightly in his fingers was a single slightly crushed flower. "Thank you, Miss." Syanja felt a lump form in her throat. She gently patted his head, accepting the gift. She took a step toward the car, but looking at her bare feet and then looking back at the shivering mother, she stopped. She couldn't just leave them here in the freezing fog. Turning back around, she walked right up to the woman. "Please, come with me." The lady gazed up at her, a weak overwhelmed smile touching her lips. "You... you've already done far too much for us, Miss. We can't burden you." Syanja extended her hand, her grip firm and filled with compassion as she helped the woman stand. "It's no burden at all. Please, let me help you." With Lee's assistance, Syanja guided them through the storm and opened the car door, ensuring they were safely settled into the warm dry interior. Slipping into the front passenger seat, Syanja let out a breath as Lee started the engine and carefully drove off into the mist. At that exact moment, the luxury sedan carrying Jung-Hoon and his friends was crawling through the exact same gridlocked intersection. Jung-Hoon leaned his head against the window, watching the rain cascade down the glass. The weather perfectly matched his mood. But as the car slowed to a crawl near the footpath, his sharp eyes caught a movement through the thick fog. Through the grey haze, he saw a girl. She was kneeling in the pouring rain, completely unbothered by the storm, placing her own shoes onto the feet of a poor young boy. Jung-Hoon froze, his chest tightening with a sudden unexplainable curiosity. He pressed closer to the glass, his eyes tracking her every move. There was a raw captivating grace to the way she comforted the small family, completely oblivious to the elite corporate world moving around her. Who is she? Jung-Hoon thought, his mind racing as a strange fascination took hold of him. I can't see her face clearly. Damnit, this fog... Before he could lean any closer, a loud obnoxious voice echoed right next to his ear. "Whhhhaaaaat are youuuuuuu looookinggggggg at?!" Jung-Hoon flinched, wincing as Ho-Jin practically shouted into his eardrum. Ho-Jin, who happened to be the twin brother of VIM Empire's CEO, Hyun-Tae was the ultimate charming heartbreaker of their circle. He possessed a wildly successful business reputation, but around his brothers, he was a flirty relentless tease who loved pushing everyone's buttons. "Man, what is your problem, Ho-Jin?" Jung-Hoon muttered, an annoyed expression taking over his features as he shoved Ho-Jin's face away. Jung-Hoon immediately snapped his gaze back to the window, but the footpath was empty. The girl was gone. A sudden wave of panic hit his chest, and his eyes darted frantically across the crowded streets, trying to find any trace of her. "What on earth are you searching for?" U-Ram asked from the front seat, noticing his cousin's uncharacteristic restlessness. Jung-Hoon didn't answer, his eyes still scanning the rain. But before he could brush it off, another voice piped up from the corner of the car. "Our Jung-Hoon was looking at a beautiful girl," Ji-Ho said, a massive bright grin lighting up his face. Ji-Ho was the undeniable sunshine of the group, an incredibly hardworking billionaire who was famous for his infectious laughter and his absolute obsession with photography. He held up a high-end digital camera, tapping the screen. "The girl who was helping that poor lady and the boy in the rain. I caught the whole thing." Jung-Hoon whipped his head around, shooting Ji-Ho a lethal death glare that could melt steel. But the warning was completely useless; the moment the rest of the car caught on, the teasing started instantly. "Ohhh? A girl?" Ho-Jin laughed, leaning in. "Our untouchable CEO is staring at a stranger? Uh-huh?" Jung-Hoon let out a defeated groan, burying his face in his palms as his cheeks burned. "Seriously though, she was really pretty," Ji-Ho said, his tone softening as he looked down at the camera display. "I actually managed to zoom in and catch a clear shot of her face right before she got into a car. Look." Jung-Hoon didn't hesitate. He lunged forward, snatching the expensive camera straight out of Ji-Ho's hands. His eyes locked onto the glowing screen, and his breath caught. The image was crystal clear. It was her, the girl from the fog, holding a small flower with a smile so radiant it seemed to cut right through the stormy grey background of the photo. "Whoa, easy boy!" Ji-Ho chuckled, raising his hands. "That lens is incredibly expensive!" An overwhelming rush of emotion hit Jung-Hoon's chest. Without a word, he threw his arms around Ji-Ho, giving him a tight sudden hug before playfully planting a rough kiss on his cheek in sheer relief. The entire car erupted into loud shouts and laughter. "Ohhh! Our baby is officially in love!" Ho-Jin cheered. Jung-Hoon flushed a deep bright red, completely embarrassed as he handed the camera back and looked away. From the front seat, U-Ram shook his head, a fond amused smile on his face. "Okay, okay, stop teasing him. Calm down, everyone." As the chaotic laughter settled, Jung-Hoon leaned his head back against the headrest, his fingers resting over his chest where his heart was still hammering. He closed his eyes, the image of her face burned into his mind, and within a few moments, the exhaustion of the week caught up to him, and he drifted into a peaceful sleep. A short drive later, Mr. Lee pulled the sedan up to the grand entrance of a high end shopping mall. Syanja opened her door, stepping out into the dry shelter of the awning. "Mr. Lee, I'm taking them inside for some shopping," she said, leaning into the front window. "Please, wait here where it's dry." Lee nodded respectfully. Syanja walked to the back doors, opening them for the mother and son, and guided them out of the chill and into the warmth of the massive glittering mall. The mother and little boy walked in a daze, their eyes darting to the towering glass displays and luxury storefronts. It had been an incredibly long time since anyone had looked at them with kindness, let alone brought them to a place like this. Syanja turned to them, her chest swelling with happiness. "Just tell me whatever you want, okay? I'll buy everything you both need." The woman slowed her steps, looking down at the floorboards awkwardly. "You... you've already done so much for us, Miss. We can't accept more." Syanja’s bright smile dropped slightly, a wave of deep empathy washing over her. She didn't want them to feel like a burden. Taking the woman's hands, she gave them a gentle squeeze. "Don't say that. Please. Let's just enjoy the shopping." For the next three hours, Syanja took them into every clothing and shoe boutique in the mall. She picked out warm coats, sturdy boots for the boy, soft sweaters, and bags of essential items, completely transforming their wardrobe until they were loaded down with shopping bags. By the time they exited the mall, the rain had stopped, leaving the evening air crisp and clean. Syanja spotted Lee waiting patiently by the idling car. "Oh, we've made him wait for so long," Syanja chuckled softly, guiding her new friends toward the vehicle. They hopped into the back seat, and as Lee shifted into drive, he glanced back. "Miss Syanja, would you still like to visit that cafeteria?" Syanja nodded happily. "Yes, please. We all need a good meal." After a short smooth drive through the city, Lee pulled up to a cozy beautifully lit cafeteria. "Miss Syanja, we've arrived." Syanja turned to the mother and son. "You two go on inside where it's warm. I'll follow you in right after Mr. Lee parks the car." The family nodded, stepping out of the vehicle and walking through the glass doors. Syanja followed a moment later, the bell above the door chiming as she stepped into the aromatic warmth of the cafe. She began scanning the room for an empty table, intending to order a massive feast for them. But as she took a step toward the counter, something suddenly wrapped tightly around her legs. Syanja gasped, frowning in confusion as she looked down. Huddled against her knees was a tiny girl with massive round blue eyes and a breathtakingly cute smile. She had long silky black hair, and she was looking up at Syanja with pure mischief dancing in her gaze. "Maa... save me, please?" the little girl whispered, giggling. Hearing the word Maa, an instant fierce maternal instinct flared in Syanja’s chest. Without even thinking, she knelt down, gathering the tiny girl into her arms and lifting her into a warm hug. The little girl buried her face in Syanja's shoulder, letting out a happy sigh. "You're so soft." Syanja chuckled, resting her chin against the girl's dark hair, completely charmed. But before she could ask what was wrong, a breathless hurried pair of footsteps approached from behind. "Don't tell me she made a fool out of you, too?" a woman's voice gasped. Syanja blinked, breaking the hug slightly to look up. Standing there was a beautiful flustered woman holding a small bottle of syrup. "She's my daughter," the woman explained, shaking her head with an exasperated but loving sigh. "Her name's Nina, and she's five years old. I'm so sorry about her." Syanja smiled warmly, still holding the little girl securely. "Oh! No, don't apologize at all. I didn't know... she just ran up and asked me for help." The mother stepped closer, gently patting Nina’s head. "I'm Lara. Honestly, she completely tricked you. I was trying to give her her medicine, but she hates the taste, so she bolted the second my back was turned." Syanja looked at Nina, who just offered a cheeky toothy giggle, completely caught in her crime. "Aww, you're far too cute to be a troublemaker," Syanja cooed, bopping her nose. With a squeal of delight, Nina leaped out of Syanja's arms and threw herself into Lara’s embrace, buried her face in her mother's neck and began tickling her. "Stop, y-you... you little bear!" Lara gasped, bursting into loud bright laughter as she held her daughter tight. The two of them laughed so loudly, their joy filling the cozy atmosphere of the cafeteria. Syanja stood back, a beautiful wistful smile on her face as she admired the pure love between the mother and child. But the laughter was cut short. The glass doors of the cafeteria chimed open, and Driver Lee walked inside, scanning the room. The moment his eyes landed on Lara and Nina, his professional demeanor completely vanished. Without a single word, Lee rushed across the floor, threw his arms around both Lara and Nina, and pulled them into a fierce deeply emotional hug. Syanja’s jaw dropped, her eyes widening in absolute shock as she stared at her driver.
